Abazagorath’s The Satanic Verses conjures vivid memories of last year’s excellent offering from Inquisition. Both sought to create a distinctly American parallel to the Europeans’ wave of black metal in the late ‘90s, and while Abazagorath have remained a conspicuous obscurity since the release of their powerful debut Tenebrarum Cadent Exsurgemus, they’ve remained a stalwart presence to any with an interest in USBM history. While the cast of The Satanic Verses offers but a sparing resemblance to the Abazagorath of yesteryear (only Chris “Warhead” Demydenko remains of the original members), this latest album offers something of a dying breed in black metal; that is, an unapologetically traditional sound with the authenticity and conviction necessary to make it work.
