The early days of death metal saw a strange sort of convergent evolution on both sides of the Atlantic. In the Floridian scene we saw the famous pioneers of the genre such as Death, Atheist, Morbid Angel, Deicide, et al, whose work was characterised in part by fiddly, byzantine songwriting which would use many disparate passages over the course of relatively short compositions. At the same time, we saw the emergence in Europe of acts like Entombed, Dismember and Unleased in Sweden, and Bolt Thrower and Carcass in the UK – although distinct from Sweden’s burgeoning Gothenburg melodeath scene, these bands typically incorporated a more measured, rockish approach than the frantic thrash-metal-with-syphilis of their North American counterparts.
