I do not think it would stir controversy to say that black metal reached its stylistic potential within the past decade. I would never discount the possibility of future masterpieces and novel permutations just around the corner, but I doubt (tantamount to a certainty) that something could take the genre further than the religious chaos of Deathspell Omega’sFas – Ite, Maledicti in Ignem Aeternum or the brooding psychosis of The Ruins of Beverast‘s first album Unlock the Shrine. In fact, most efforts to earnestly push the prescribed boundaries of black metal nowadays are left to choose between muddying the style with other genres (see: most avant-garde), or amping the hallmark traits, taunting the limits of listenability and (in some cases) becoming an extreme caricature of the genre the artist originally intended to innovate.
