Formed from the ashes of Milanese doom metal group Ras Algethi, Canaan have been operating for almost two decades. Since 1996’s Blue Fire, the band has been writing their particular dirges (Ras Algethi’s original atmospheric doom sound is rarely far away) and mixing their albums up with ambient pieces and world music interludes. Of Prisoners, Wandering Souls and Cruel Fears, released in 2012, has pushed both aspects of Canaan’s sound even further. The ambient sections are quieter and more spacious; the darkwave is slower, sadder, and more oppressive. For the first time though, Canaan have enough material to fill two full albums, and they’ve tried out something different here.
